HIPÓDROMO DE LA ZARZUELA Engineer: Eduardo Torroja (@eduardo.torroja ) (@ietorroja )(#eduardotorroja ) Photography: Ana Amado Text: Andrés Patiño Conceived in the convulsive period before the subsequent Spanish Civil War, the Hipódromo de la Zarzuela has its origin in the public contest held in 1934 by the Technical Office of Access and Outskirts of Madrid for the construction of a new racecourse to replace the already old one located in the Paseo de la Castellana. The award-winning proposal was praised for its novelty and freshness in dealing with a program of great complexity while offering functional and rational answers with a language halfway between neo-regionalism and rationalism, very much in fashion at the time. In particular it was known to value the important relationship between the spectator and the horse, which must always be in visual contact (to favor the bet, origin and ultimate cause of the equestrian show), but whose routes must always be independent and not intersect in any point, as a way to prevent the horse from being disturbed or affected. The project presented to the contest, resolved in metallic structure, is formally very advanced and it is based well on the topography of the plot.
