Modernist Garden Series Eliel Saarinen, Cranbrook Academy (1925) Bloomfield Hills, Michigan In 1925 the news tycoon, George Gough Booth asked Eliel Saarinen to design the campus of Cranbrook Educational Community, (now the Cranbrook Academy and Museum) intended to be an American equivalent to the Bauhaus. Saarinen taught there and became president of the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1932, serving until 1948, two years prior to his death. Among his student-collaborators were Ray Eames (then Ray Kaiser) and Charles Eames. Saarinen influenced their subsequent furniture design. Sculptors Carl Milles and Marshall Fredericks also spent many years in residence at Cranbrook, Milles indeed assisting Saarinen in the design of the gardens and water features to best shown off his sculptures that are dotted about them. The gardens and buildings are much a work of Modernist Nordic Classicism, in the vein of Gunnar Asplund and Sigurd Lewerentz.
